U.S. citizens must have a valid visa (or an OCI card) to enter India. Visa-free entry is not available for U.S. passport holders.

Indian Visa:
e-Visa (Most Popular): Applied for online prior to travel via the official Indian Government portal (indianvisaonline.gov.in).
30-Day Tourist e-Visa: Double-entry.
1-Year Tourist e-Visa: Multiple entries; max stay of 180 days per calendar year.
5-Year Tourist e-Visa: Multiple entries; max stay of 180 days per calendar year.
e-Business / e-Medical / e-Conference Visas: Also available online.
Paper / Regular Consular Visa: A 10-year physical tourist visa stamped into the passport, applied for through India's official outsourcing partner (VFS Global).
Digital Arrival Form (Su-Swagatam):
Foreign nationals entering India must complete the electronic arrival card within 72 hours before arrival via the official indianvisaonline.gov.in portal or the Su-Swagatam mobile app.
Return or Onward Travel Ticket:
You may be asked to show proof of departure from India (e.g., flight booking) upon check-in or immigration arrival.
Mandatory Document Requirements for Online Application (e-Visa)
Passport Scan: High-quality PDF copy of the photo/data page of your U.S. passport.
Digital Photo: JPEG passport-style color photo with a plain white background.
Business / Medical Details: If applying for an e-Business or e-Medical visa, an invitation letter or hospital letterhead is required.

How to Apply
Applying for an Indian e-Visa is done entirely online through the official Government of India portal.
Prerequisites & File Formats
Before starting your application, ensure you have the following ready:
Passport Photo: JPEG format, size 10 KB to 1 MB, square aspect ratio, plain white/light background.
Passport Page Scan: PDF format, size 10 KB to 300 KB, clear scan of the photo/data page.
Hotel / Stay Details: Name, address, and phone number of your first hotel or contact in India.
Payment Method: Credit/Debit Card or PayPal.
1.Access the Official Government Portal:Avoid third-party scam sites charging inflated fees.
Navigate directly to the official site: indianvisaonline.gov.in. Click on "Apply here for e-Visa" or "e-Visa".
Note: Save your Temporary Application ID generated at the top of the page in case your session times out.
2.Select Visa Type and Travel Details:
Fill in your primary trip parameters:
Passport Type: Select Ordinary Passport.
Nationality: Select United States of America.
Port of Arrival: Select the airport or seaport where you will first land in India.
Visa Service: Choose your e-Visa category (e.g., eTourist Visa - 30 Days, 1 Year, or 5 Years).
3.Enter Personal & Family Background Information:
Complete the detailed personal application form:
Personal Info: Full name, gender, place of birth, visible identification marks (e.g., "none" or eye/hair color).
Address & Passport: Current home address and passport issuance details.
Family & Occupation: Parents' names/birthplaces, marital status, and employer details.
4.Provide Trip Details and References:
Provide details about your itinerary and emergency contacts:
Places to Visit: List the cities/regions you plan to visit.
Reference in India: Hotel name, address, and telephone number for your first stay.
Reference in USA: Name, address, and phone number of a family member or friend.
Travel History: Countries visited in the last 10 years.
5.Answer Security Questions & Upload Documents:
Answer the mandatory background/security questions (ensure all are answered accurately).
Upload your JPEG passport photo and PDF scan of your passport info page.
Click "Upload Document" and confirm the files preview clearly.
6.Review Application and Pay the Visa Fee:
Double-check all entered information on the review screen—once submitted, errors cannot be corrected.
Proceed to payment (options usually include SBIePay or Axis Bank gateway for credit cards/PayPal).
7.Receive and Print Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA):
You will receive an application acknowledgment email shortly.
Within 72 hours, check your application status on the portal or check your email for the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) showing status "GRANTED".
Print out the ETA: You must present a physical paper copy at airport check-in and Indian immigration.
