Indian Tourist Visa
Most foreign citizens traveling to India require a visa prior to departure. Only citizens of Nepal and Bhutan are visa-exempt (provided they travel with valid ID and do not enter from third countries).
Entry requirements generally depend on your passport nationality:
1. Indian e-Visa (Online Application)
Over 160 nationalities—including passport holders from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, European Union nations, and UAE—are eligible to apply online for an electronic visa (e-Visa) before traveling.
Categories: e-Tourist, e-Business, e-Medical, e-Conference, and e-Medical Attendant.
Validity: e-Tourist visas are available as 30-day (double entry), 1-year (multiple entry), or 5-year (multiple entry) permits.
Application Window: Apply online via the official Government of India portal (indianvisaonline.gov.in) at least 4 to 7 days before departure.
Entry Ports: Valid for arrival through designated international airports (e.g., Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai) and major seaports.
e-Visa Requirements:
Passport: Valid for at least 6 months beyond the arrival date with at least 2 blank pages.
Digital Photo: Recent passport-style color photo with a plain white background.
Bio Page Scan: Clear PDF scan of your passport’s biographical page.
Payment: Visa fee paid online via credit/debit card.
2. Regular / Paper Visa (Embassy Application)
Foreign nationals who are not eligible for an e-Visa (or those seeking long-term stay, work, study, or journalist visas) must apply for a physical sticker visa through an Indian Embassy or outsourced application center (VFS Global / BLS) in their country of residence.
U.S. citizens must have a valid visa (or an OCI card) to enter India. Visa-free entry is not available for U.S. passport holders.

Digital Arrival Form (Su-Swagatam):
Foreign nationals entering India must complete the electronic arrival card within 72 hours before arrival via the official indianvisaonline.gov.in portal or the Su-Swagatam mobile app.
Return or Onward Travel Ticket:
You may be asked to show proof of departure from India (e.g., flight booking) upon check-in or immigration arrival.
Mandatory Document Requirements for Online Application (e-Visa)
Passport Scan: High-quality PDF copy of the photo/data page of your U.S. passport.
Digital Photo: JPEG passport-style color photo with a plain white background.
Business / Medical Details: If applying for an e-Business or e-Medical visa, an invitation letter or hospital letterhead is required.

How to Apply
Applying for an Indian e-Visa is done entirely online through the official Government of India portal.
Prerequisites & File Formats
Before starting your application, ensure you have the following ready:
Passport Photo: JPEG format, size 10 KB to 1 MB, square aspect ratio, plain white/light background.
Passport Page Scan: PDF format, size 10 KB to 300 KB, clear scan of the photo/data page.
Hotel / Stay Details: Name, address, and phone number of your first hotel or contact in India.
Payment Method: Credit/Debit Card or PayPal.

Navigate directly to the official site: indianvisaonline.gov.in. Click on "Apply here for e-Visa" or "e-Visa".
Note: Save your Temporary Application ID generated at the top of the page in case your session times out.
2.Select Visa Type and Travel Details:
Fill in your primary trip parameters:
Passport Type: Select Ordinary Passport.
Nationality: Select United States of America.
Port of Arrival: Select the airport or seaport where you will first land in India.
Visa Service: Choose your e-Visa category (e.g., eTourist Visa - 30 Days, 1 Year, or 5 Years).
3.Enter Personal & Family Background Information:
Complete the detailed personal application form:
Personal Info: Full name, gender, place of birth, visible identification marks (e.g., "none" or eye/hair color).
Address & Passport: Current home address and passport issuance details.
Family & Occupation: Parents' names/birthplaces, marital status, and employer details.
4.Provide Trip Details and References:
Provide details about your itinerary and emergency contacts:
Places to Visit: List the cities/regions you plan to visit.
Reference in India: Hotel name, address, and telephone number for your first stay.
Reference in USA: Name, address, and phone number of a family member or friend.
Travel History: Countries visited in the last 10 years.
5.Answer Security Questions & Upload Documents:
Answer the mandatory background/security questions (ensure all are answered accurately).
Upload your JPEG passport photo and PDF scan of your passport info page.
Click "Upload Document" and confirm the files preview clearly.
6.Review Application and Pay the Visa Fee:
Double-check all entered information on the review screen—once submitted, errors cannot be corrected.
Proceed to payment (options usually include SBIePay or Axis Bank gateway for credit cards/PayPal).
7.Receive and Print Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA):
You will receive an application acknowledgment email shortly.
Within 72 hours, check your application status on the portal or check your email for the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) showing status "GRANTED".
Print out the ETA: You must present a physical paper copy at airport check-in and Indian immigration.
Indian Passport Renewal
Renewing an Indian passport while living abroad is a two-portal process involving the Passport Seva Overseas Portal and your local outsourcing service provider (usually VFS Global or BLS International, depending on the country).
1.Register on the Passport Seva Overseas Portal:Generates your mandatory Application Reference Number (ARN).
Visit the official Passport Seva Overseas Portal.
Select your country of residence and create a new account.
Log in, select "Apply for Reissue of Passport", and fill out the online form.
Review and submit the form to generate your Application Reference Number (ARN). Save or print the completed application form.
2.Register on the Consular Service Provider Portal:VFS Global or BLS International.
Go to the official processing partner's website for your region (e.g., VFS Global for USA, UK, Canada, Australia, etc.).
Create an account and start a new application using your ARN from Step 1.
Choose your submission mode: Postal/Courier or In-Person Appointment.
3.Prepare Your Document Package:
Assemble your physical application packet (ensure all photocopies are self-attested):
Printed Application Forms: Govt. Passport Seva form (from Step 1) and VFS/BLS confirmation page.
Original Current Passport: Must be sent along with a photocopy of the first 2 and last 2 pages, plus current visa/permit status page.
Proof of Legal Status: Valid visa, green card, work permit, or PR card.
Proof of Address Abroad: Utility bill, lease agreement, or driver's license matching your current residential address.
Photographs: Standard 2" x 2" (or ICAO compliant) passport-style photos with a plain white background.
Annexures/Affidavits: Mandatory self-declarations (e.g., Annexure E for standard reissue) or change-of-address documents if applicable.
4.Pay Fees and Submit:
Complete payment online via the service provider portal (or via cashier's check/money order if mailing).
Mailing Option: Attach prepaid shipping labels generated on the portal and mail the sealed envelope to the designated VFS/BLS center for your state/consular jurisdiction.
In-Person Option: Attend your scheduled appointment with all original documents and submit biometrics/fingerprints if requested.
