South Africa Tourist Visa

South Africa issues a Visitor’s Visa (Section 11) for short-term tourism or business visits. Visas are not issued on arrival; travelers requiring a visa must secure it in advance.

Visa Exemption & Stay Limits

  • Exempt Passports: Citizens of around 80 countries (including the US, Canada, UK, EU countries, Australia, and New Zealand) do not need a visa for visits up to 90 days (or 30 days for select countries).

  • Visa-Required Passports: Nationals from countries non-exempt from visa control must apply before departure.

Key Application Requirements

  • Passport: Valid for at least 30 days beyond your intended departure date from South Africa, with a minimum of 2 consecutive blank pages labeled "Visa".

  • Application Form: Completed Form DHA-84 (signed by applicant).

  • Flight Reservation: Round-trip flight itinerary or proof of onward travel.

  • Proof of Accommodation: Hotel booking, tour confirmation, or an invitation letter from a South African citizen or permanent resident.

  • Proof of Financial Means: Bank statements from the last 3 months (bank-certified/stamped) showing sufficient funds for the stay.

  • Yellow Fever Certificate: Mandatory if arriving from or transiting through a yellow fever endemic area.

  • Travelling with Minors (Under 18): Unabridged birth certificate (or equivalent showing both parents' details) plus parental consent affidavits if travelling with one parent or alone.

Processing & Extensions

  • Processing Time: Standard processing takes 5 to 10 working days at South African diplomatic missions abroad.

  • Extensions: An existing 90-day visitor's permit can be extended inside South Africa for an additional 90 days by applying via a VFS Visa Application Centre at least 60 days before the current endorsement expires.
