US Tourist Visa
To travel to the U.S. for tourism, foreign nationals need either an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) through the Visa Waiver Program or a B-2 Tourist Visa (often issued as a combined B-1/B-2 Visa).
Step 1: Check If You Need a Visa
Visa Waiver Program (VWP): Citizens of ~42 designated countries (e.g., UK, EU nations, Japan, Australia) traveling for under 90 days do not need a visa. Instead, apply online for ESTA approval prior to travel.
B-2 Tourist Visa: Required if your country is not part of the VWP, or if you plan to stay longer than 90 days.
Key Eligibility Criteria for the B-2 Visa
Under U.S. immigration law, applicants must prove:
Clear Travel Purpose: Temporary stay for tourism, vacation, visiting friends/family, or medical treatment.
Financial Sufficiency: Ability to cover all expenses (flights, lodging, living costs) without working in the U.S.
Binding Home Country Ties: Intent to return home after the visit (proved through employment, family ties, property, or business ownership).
Required Application Steps
Fill out Form DS-160: Complete the Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application on the official U.S. Department of State website and print the confirmation page with the barcode.
Pay the Visa Fee: The standard application fee for a B-1/B-2 visa is $185 USD. Save your receipt.
Schedule an Interview: Book an appointment at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in your country of residence. Wait times vary significantly by location.
Attend the Visa Interview: Bring your required documents and answer questions regarding your travel plans and ties to your home country.
